Chicago: St. Patrick’s Day Green River

Chicago in March = flood of green.

On the St. Patrick’s Day, the downtown Chicago is filled with green: people in green, green river, and “Green River”. It’s not so well-known among international tourists, but it’s actually a very big event: roughly 350,000 people enjoyed the day in 2012.

Now let’s see what you can enjoy in the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day.

Dyeing the Chicago River
The biggest event comes first. Scheduled for 10am, Saturday March 16th, the Chicago River is literally dyed green.  This is what makes the St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago unique, and surely what you can’t see anywhere except in Chicago. So be ready to get the best-view point to enjoy this event. According to the
St. Patrick's Day ParadeCommittee,  viewing from 1) the East side of the Michigan Avenue bridge 2) the West side of the Columbus Drive bridge, or 3)upper and lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Av. And Columbus Dr. are the best.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Once the river is dyed in green, now you are ready for the somewhat classical St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2013 takes place 2 hours after the river-dyeing.  The parade begins at noon at Balbo Dr. and Columbus Dr. and proceeds on Columbus Dr. to E. Monroe St. The parade is about 3 hours long, so if you take a seat near the point of arrival, bring snacks, drinks (“Green River” should be the best), talkative friends, etc. to enjoy the waiting time.

“Green River”
Green River is a lime-taste soda born in Chicago. You will be able to find it in the supermarkets during the days leading up to the St. Patrick’s Day. It does not look healthy or tasty, but why don’t you try at least one bottle? It’s the St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago!
