Halloween #7: Salem, Massachusetts



Well, Salem is a city, not a theme parks.
But don’t you agree that this city which is known for the Salem Witch Trial can be an ultimate place to visit in Halloween? In addition, the city of Salem hosts various Halloween events every day (!) in October. So here let’s say that Salem itself is an Halloween theme city.


Summary of the History of Salem
Salem, locates 30 minutes north by car from Boston, was first settled by Europeans in 1626.The name Salem is “a Hellenize form of the word for ‘peace’ in Arabic سلام‎ ‎ (salaam) and Hebrew שלום (shalom)” *1. The city prospered as a trading port since the origin, but, among all, one of the most known aspects of Salem is The Salem Witch Trials which took place in 1692.

The Salem Witch Trial
In 1962 the community of Salem was engulfed in a witchcraft accusations, trials, and executions. Some were prosecuted for practicing witchcraft, others were prosecuted for being an enemy of the largest family in Salem. There were victims simply who were weak and who were in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
The outbreak of witchcraft hysteria started in Salem Village, town of Danvers today.
Nearly 200 people were accused for practicing witchcraft in the summer of 1962, and 20 of them were executed.

Salem Today
On the back of the history, cultural identity of the city of Salem today reflects the trial. There are witch motifs everywhere in the city, emblem of the Salem Police features flying witch, sports teams named after witch, and witch-themed attractions, and so on. Thus Salem is a “theme city” especially in Halloween season.

What is going on in Salem during Halloween season?
In October, Halloween-related events take place every day in Salem (!)
The events range from Haunted Harbor Cruise to the lecture of Salem history, from Ghosts and Legends Trolley Tours to special haunted house.

This weekend (Oct. 27th and 28th) through Oct. 31st is particularly the busiest days for you to enjoy all the attractions in Salem.

If you are visiting the city with kids, they will love the "Professor Wunders’ School of Magic" (Oct. 27th, 10am to 11am/ 28th from 11am to 12pm) or Trick or Treat on the Wharf (Oct 28th, 5pm to 6pm).

If you who are visiting Salem with friends, please enjoy nights at Zombie Prom (Oct 28th, 9pm to 11:30pm), Devil Night at Rockafellas (Oct 31st, 7pm to 11:30pm), or Fireworks (Oct 31st, from 10pm to 10:30pm.)

Where to Stay?
Salem locates around 30minutes by car from Boston, where you can find much more accommodations.
Also public transportation like trains and buses are available between Salem and Boston. Thus booking a bed/beds in Boston can be a good idea.
